Welcome to House of Salt and Light Recipes

Caution

  • When using lye, always add the lye TO the water and never the other way around.
  • Be sure to cover your skin, wear goggles, and protective gloves when mixing the water and lye. It can cause some skin irritation if you come in contact.
  • Mix water and lye in a well-ventilates space. Any potent smell will dissipate after 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Be sure to use a container that is compatible with the lye when mixing. Certain containers can react with the lye or get too hot to handle. Please research before starting.
  • There are plenty of free websites with information on soap making. We are just the beginning to your journey.

Shampoo Bar

8 ounces olive oil
7 ounces coconut oil
5 ounces avocado oil
5 ounces castor oil
8 ounces filtered water
3.5 ounces lye

30 mL essential oils

Coconut Soap 25% superfat

840g coconut oil
234g water (any drinking water is fine)
This recipe uses a 2:1 water to lye ratio (33% lye concentration) for the water-lye solution.
115g sodium hydroxide / NaOH

30 mL essential oil

This recipe makes just under 1200g of soap (12 x 100g bars)
You will need a mould that holds at least 1.2 litres or 40.5 fluid ounces of liquid to make this recipe.

  • Melt the coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl at 30 second intervals until the coconut oil is melted.
  • Weigh lye and water into separate individual containers and tale them outside. Be sure to wear protective clothing, goggles, and gloves. Pour lye into the water and stir until dissolved, being careful not to breathe in the fumes that are given off for 1-2 minutes.
  • After several minutes, take lye and water mixture inside and pour lye water into oil and blend with a stick blender on and off until it begins to thicken (come to trace).
  • Add essential oils and blend well.
  • Pour into the mold, scraping the sides pf the pot with a rubber spatula. Allow to harden for 24 hours.
  • Remove from mold.
  • Allow to cure for 6 weeks to harden.

Goat Milk & Honey Soap

350 g olive oil
175 g coconut oil
75 g avocado oil
90 g distilled water
95 g goat milk
84.96 g lye
30 mL essential oils

  • Before beginning, freeze the goat milk to prevent it from burning when mixed into the lye solution. You can use it at the slushy stage or you can fully freeze it and use it in ice cube form.
  • Weight out the distilled water and lye, and pour the lye into the container with water. (Never pour the water into the container with lye.)
  • Mix the lye into the water until it is fully incorporated. You’ll notice that the solution will heat up and become opaque, but if left will later cool off and become transparent again. (Work outside or in a well-ventilated area, and avoid inhaling the fumes. Protect your eyes and hands with gloves and goggles.)
  • Add the frozen goat milk to the lye solution, and continue to stir as you incorporate it. It may turn slightly orange or brown due to the caramelization of the sugars in the milk reacting with the lye. To prevent it from burning, stir continuously until it has all melted and been fully incorporated into the solution.
  • In a separate bowl, measure out the oils. You can weigh them all in the same bowl by taring (setting the weight to zero) your scale between oils.
  • Add the lye solution to the oils and gently stir together until the lye solution has fully mixed with the oils.
  • You can now begin to carefully blend together the oils and lye solution with an immersion blender. You’ll want to blend for several minutes, until your soap has reached “trace.” Trace is the point in soapmaking when the oils and lye have emulsified and the saponification process begins.
  • Once you’ve reached trace, you can add the honey and any essential oils or fragrance oils that you want to use. Blend until they’ve been fully incorporated.
  • Pour the soap into soap molds.
  • Put the mold in a freezer for 24-48 hours to get it nice and hard.
  • After a couple of days, unmold the soap. If you’ve used a loaf type pan, cut the soap into bars.
  • Allow the bars of soap to cure and dry for 6 weeks before using. (While you “can” use it before then without issues, the bars will harden and improve with time. Soaps will harden into longer-lasting bars and will mellow out during the curing process.)
  • Enjoy your soap!

Conditioner Bar

4 oz of Cocoa Butter Wafers
4 oz of Unrefined Shea Butter
4 oz of Beeswax Pearls
2 oz of Fractionated Coconut Oil
30mL of Essential Oil Blend

  • Combined all ingredients and melt in a double boiler.
  • Be sure all ingredients are well combined.
  • Pour into molds.
  • Dry for 6 weeks.
  • Enjoy!
